Fluoride helps protect against decay, which is more common as you age. Use fluoride toothpaste daily and drink fluoridated tap water to reduce the risk of cavities. If your municipality’s tap water doesn’t include fluoride, your dentist may also recommend in-office fluoride treatments for added protection.
Certain factors, such as medications or chronic conditions, can increase your risk for dry mouth, which can lead to cavities and affect the fit of dentures. Dry mouth can cause discomfort, but there are ways to manage it. Try a moisturizing mouthwash, chew sugar-free gum, or use artificial saliva, which mimics real saliva. Consult your doctor or dentist if medication is the cause; he or she can adjust your dosage or suggest alternatives.

If you wear dentures, clean them daily using a non-abrasive denture cleaner. Brush your gums and tongue with a soft toothbrush to remove food and bacteria. If you have partial dentures, floss between the implants before reinserting them. Your dentist can provide specific care instructions to extend the life of your dentures.
Gum disease is also a concern, affecting nearly 64 percent of adults over 65. While common, gum disease is preventable. Maintain good dental hygiene and visit your dentist regularly to prevent or address it early to enjoy a healthy smile at any age.
